Our History

History of CommWell Health

CommWell Health (formerly Tri-County Community Health Center) began as a part-time migrant health program. In 1976, through the federally funded Migrant Health Program, the Health Departments of Sampson and Johnston counties partnered to form a health center for this special-needs population. The Sampson Johnston Migrant Health Clinic was established in a former country store, located three miles west of the town of Newton Grove, on U.S. Highway 13.

The following year, in 1977, Tri-County Community Health Council, Inc. was incorporated, and since that time has grown from its initial site near Newton Grove and Spivey’s Corner to a Health Center system with locations across southeastern North Carolina. In November 2009 the Board of Directors voted to change the organization’s name to CommWell Health to reflect the organization’s growth and expanded services throughout southeastern North Carolina. The name CommWell Health reflects “your community, your wellness, your health.”

Since CommWell Health opened its doors, the organization has been an integral part of the health care of communities in southeastern North Carolina. CommWell Health represents wellness and health as its primary focus and considers the communities it serves as its waiting room.

As a community-governed and owned organization, CommWell Health’s success as an award-winning nonprofit organization has developed on its ability to change to meet the needs of those it serves, while remaining committed to providing evidence based, quality, affordable health care in an environment of service excellence.
At CommWell Health, all people matter!
